National Aviation Day: 5 Iconic American Aircraft to Build

cuber time |

Every year on August 19, the United States celebrates National Aviation Day, honoring the history, innovation, and pioneers who shaped American aviation.

Established in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the holiday falls on Orville Wright's birthday, commemorating the aviation pioneer who, together with his brother Wilbur, achieved the first successful powered flight.

From WWII transport aircraft to modern fighter jets and advanced commercial airliners, aviation history is filled with remarkable machines. At Cubertime, we believe one of the best ways to appreciate that history is to build it yourself.

Here are five aircraft models that bring some of aviation's most memorable designs to your shelf.

1. Douglas C-47 Skytrain: The WWII Workhorse

The Douglas C-47 Skytrain was one of the most important transport aircraft of World War II. Developed from the civilian DC-3, it served across multiple theaters and played a major role in the D-Day airborne operations, carrying paratroopers and towing military gliders.

Its rugged design also allowed the C-47 to remain in service around the world for decades after the war.

Designed and authorized by Al3xW40, this C-47 model captures the classic WWII twin-engine transport aircraft in a distinctive New Zealand civil aviation livery.

The 2,612-piece set measures 96 × 64 studs and accommodates 13 minifigures. Interactive details include rotating propellers, retractable landing gear, movable flaps and adjustable tail surfaces. The passenger and cargo doors open independently, while the interior includes detailed seating and tray tables.

For aviation collectors, it combines historical character with an engaging building experience.

2. Boeing B-52D Stratofortress: A Cold War Icon

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is one of the most recognizable aircraft in U.S. Air Force history. The B-52D played an important role during the Cold War and saw extensive combat service in Southeast Asia.

In 1957, three B-52s completed the first nonstop round-the-world flight by jet aircraft, demonstrating the aircraft's impressive range and endurance.

The 788-piece model includes an opening cockpit and fuselage bomb bay, along with a classic jungle camouflage finish. It works equally well as a military aircraft model, aviation collectible, or desktop display.

3. General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon: The Modern Multirole Fighter

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is one of the world's most successful multirole fighter aircraft.

Developed from the U.S. Air Force's Lightweight Fighter program in the 1970s, the F-16 introduced a compact design, bubble canopy, side-mounted control stick, and exceptional maneuverability. It reached combat-ready status in 1980 and continues to serve with air forces around the world.

4. Grumman F-14 Tomcat: The Naval Aviation Legend

Few American fighter jets are as recognizable as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

Developed for the U.S. Navy, the F-14 was designed for fleet air defense and air superiority. Its variable-sweep wings gave it a distinctive appearance and helped make it one of the most memorable aircraft of the jet age.

The Tomcat became even more famous through Top Gun and remained in U.S. Navy service until 2006.

The Boeing B787 Dreamliner represents a new generation of long-range commercial aircraft. Designed in the United States, the 787 uses extensive composite materials and combines long-range performance with improved efficiency.

The B787-9 can connect distant cities with nonstop flights, making it an important aircraft in modern commercial aviation.

This version features the distinctive Qantas livery, celebrating one of the world's best-known airlines.
