The UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-blade, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. Developed from the S-70 design submitted for the U.S. Army’s Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in 1972, it was selected as the winner in 1976 and entered service in 1979 as the UH-60A, replacing the UH-1 Iroquois. Improved utility versions (UH-60L and UH-60M) and numerous modified variants have since been produced for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, including the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk and Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk, as well as export, VIP, and special operations models. The Black Hawk family has seen combat in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and other regions, and continues to serve with the U.S. Army and allied nations worldwide.
