The RAH-66 Comanche was a stealth armed reconnaissance and attack helicopter developed for the U.S. Army. Originating from the Light Helicopter Experimental (LHX) program in the early 1980s, the design was selected in 1991, and two prototypes flew between 1996 and 2004. Intended to locate and designate targets for AH-64 Apaches using advanced sensors, the Comanche featured stealth technologies, an internal rotary cannon, and internal weapon bays with optional stub wings for light attack. After entering a $3.1 billion engineering phase in 2000, the program underwent significant restructuring, reducing procurement to 650 helicopters and causing unit costs to skyrocket. With nearly $7 billion already spent, the Army canceled the Comanche in February 2004, opting instead to upgrade existing helicopters and accelerate the development of unmanned aerial vehicles; both prototypes were later put on public display.
