The CH-46 Sea Knight is a medium-lift tandem-rotor transport helicopter with counter-rotating three-blade rotors that fold for shipboard storage. Two General Electric T58 turboshaft engines are mounted beside the rear rotor pedestal, with the forward rotor driven via a shaft; the engines are cross-coupled so either can power both rotors in an emergency. It has fixed tricycle landing gear with twin wheels on each leg, giving a nose-up stance for easier cargo handling, and rear sponsons house the landing gear plus fuel tanks with a total capacity of 350 US gallons (1,438 L).
