2. Known by the NATO reporting name "Typhoon," this class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine was the largest ever built by the Soviet Union—and remains the largest submarine ever constructed by humanity. It was designed by the Rubin Design Bureau.
3. This submarine was a behemoth of the Soviet Navy during the 1970s and 1980s. Not only was it a massive vessel, but it was also nuclear-powered and heavily armed, carrying 20 nuclear missiles. A quintessential product of the Cold War, it was created to uphold the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Compared to its American counterpart, the *Ohio*-class, the Typhoon-class is nearly twice the size by volume, yet its nuclear delivery capability is roughly equivalent. Equipped with 20 missile tubes carrying SS-N-20 ballistic missiles—which boast a range of 8,300 kilometers—the Typhoon-class can strike any target within the same hemisphere. It currently holds the record for the largest submarine in the world in terms of both volume and tonnage.
