2. Backstory: The SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft (nicknamed the "Blackbird") was a long-range, high-altitude, high-speed strategic reconnaissance jet operated by the U.S. Air Force. The SR-71 incorporated a wealth of advanced technologies for its time—including a titanium airframe and variable-cycle turbojet/ramjet engines—and remains remarkably advanced even by modern standards. It was the first practical jet aircraft to successfully overcome the "thermal barrier" (the extreme heat generated by high-speed flight); notably, its combat record shows that not a single SR-71 was ever shot down by enemy aircraft or anti-aircraft missiles. Development of the SR-71 began in 1963 by a U.S. aerospace firm; it made its maiden flight in 1964, entered service in 1966, and saw a total production run of 32 units.
